The new site is coming along great… I’ve got Joomla 1.5 fully integrated with vBulletin, and the Google Maps API is working quite well. I still need to mess around with some of the API’s styles so that I can get everything looking the way I want, but for only starting a few days ago, I think things are coming along great!
Stay tuned for the official launch. Yes you too Mr. Scatteredgenius!
Well I have to declare that I’m an official GeoNerd. I’ve always been a huge fan of GPS and all the applications that go along with it, and now that I’ve started geocaching I can’t get enough.
So much so that I’m working on a new website that deals specifically with gps and mapping. I wont give too many details right now as its nowhere near completion, and I don’t want to blurt something out that isn’t going to be included in the final product. For now you can see how the layout is coming in the image to the right.
As for the geocaching, I went out on Saturday night and found my first cache. It was pretty cool to think that someone from a different country planted it there, and I was able to actually track to it with my Garmin. I’ll definitely be out on the road looking for more.
Wow was I ever crappy at picking the winners in round 2… I managed a measly 1-3 record. Ok, here we go with the conference finals and here are my predictions. Not nearly as much detail as last time because frankly, with a 1-3 record, it was a waste of breath
Eastern Conference - Pittsburgh Penguins
I think that Philly’s luck will be over as the pens continue to cruise. 8-1 record so far in the playoffs is unreal, and they should be able to cruise by the Flyers. Since I was so crappy in predicting the second round, I’ll just throw it out there and guess that the pens will take this one in 5.
Western Conference - Detroit Red Wings
The Wings steam rolled the Avalanche in round two, and showed that their round one follies were a thing of the past. They are the western conference powerhouse, and undoubtedly proved that in round two. The Stars are looking very strong, and I’d love to pick them, but I don’t know if Detroit can be stopped? Wings in 6.
I’m a big fan of anything to do with GPS and mapping, and have been doing a lot of reading about Geocaching lately, only to find that its something that is pretty interesting to me. If you read my about page you’d see that in my past blogging life I created a mobile blog that would upload pictures from my phone, along with GPS coordinates to see where the picture was taken. That was a lot of fun, but I don’t think its something that I’m going to explore again.
Anyway, with all the reading I did about Geocaching I decided to go out and get myself a basic GPS unit. I thought I may be able to get away with the Garmin Nuvi that I have in my car, but that thing doesn’t show me gps coordinates so its useless for Geocaching. I instead did my research and selected the Garmin eTrex H. This thing is pretty basic in that it doesn’t have any actual maps built in, but thats not something that I don’t need anyway. All I wanted and found in this one is a high sensitivity GPS receiver, and for the unit to be able to show me the GPS coordinates right on the screen.
I tested this thing out yesterday on the way home from the store, and when I got home and checked the locations on google maps I was very impressed. From what I could tell, It was able to nail it down to exactly where I was when I saved the coordinates. This thing is slick, and I look forward to playing with it as I hunt out some of the current Geocaches and then get into my own little project!
Since I’m brand new to this, let me know if you have any tips or secrets you’d like to share! So far I’ve found this site which has a beginners guide to geocaching adventures. Let me know if you have more!
