I’ve got a buddy heading off to Japan in May for 2 weeks, and he asked me to put together a list of places that I think he should check out. Of course there are hundreds of places that I’d like to recommend, but instead I’ll just give him a few that will definitely keep him busy for two weeks, and also share them with you!
First off, here is a map of Japan with pegs on the spots that correspond to the pictures below:
I thought about going into detail about each place, but I’ll leave that for you to google and explore on your own. I’ll simply show you, and give you the name, and the rest is up to you.
Niseko Hirafu - I know you’re going in May and there is no hope of snow, but I still wanted to show you how awesome the powder is at this place!

Kinkakuji (Kyoto) - The famous golden pavilion.

Meiji-jingu (Tokyo)

Tokyo Tower (Tokyo)

Mt. Fuji

Kondoi Beach (Taketomi-jima, Okinawa)

Taketomi Post Office & Stone Buildings (Okinawa)

Geronimo’s Shot Bar (Roppongi, Tokyo) - Look for Shane (left) and that yellow tie hanging near the back of the bar when you get there.

Shibuya (Tokyo)

Odaiba (Tokyo)

Asakusa (Tokyo)

Shinjuku & Kabuki-cho (Tokyo)

Ojima (Hiroshima)

Osaka Castle (Osaka)

Himeji Castle (Himeji)

Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Dome (Hiroshima)

Kiyomizu-dera (Kyoto)

Gion (Kyoto)

Mt. Koya (World Heritage Site)

There it is in a nutshell… happy googling, and get in touch if you want to know more about any of these places.

Good to hear! I’ve been watching the grand sumo tournament over here on NHK and looks like a good tourny so far. Did you get to throw your seat pad around after the big fight?

Naw, didn’t get to that match, I think that was the day after I went. Definately a good show though!
